Text | Hi Mike, Mom and I have been doing some checking on her family background on her dad's side because we never knew anything about the Barr side of the family. But, we've hit a wall and cannot find out if he died or divorced my mother's grandmother. I was hoping you could find a death certificate or divorce decree, with your advanced skills. Here is what we know: Mom's dad, Stanley James Barr was born in 1897 in New York. His mother was Ada Glanfield Barr, born in 1871 in England. (My mom is named after her.) His dad was James Barr, born in 1857 in England. According to a 1901 census in 1900 from New York, Ada and James were married (although we could not find out if they were married in England or NY) and had my grandfather, Stanley. Then on a 1910 census from Colorado, Ada Glanfield Barr was married to John Henry. Stanley James was listed as a step-son. In 1920 Ada and John Henry were in Utah (my grandfather Stanley is not listed and we cannot find him although my mom says she knew her dad left home at an early age and 'rode the rails'). It would be interesting to find out where he was at that time. He eventually met my grandmother, Olive May Bookless, in Kansas. Their first child, Minta Ann (my mom's sister), was born in 1929 so I assume they got married between 1925-1928 but could not find a marriage certificate. The family came to California around 1934 to be closer to Stanley's mother, Ada. In 1930 Ada and John Henry were in Sausalito (which is where my mother remembers her). On that census, it shows Ada as a housekeeper to William Favile (Mom remembers her working and living there and she also remembers Mr. Favile). But, it shows James Henry as a boarder which came as a complete shock to Mom as she never knew her grandmother had a living husband although she knew there must have been a second husband at one time because they called her 'Grandma Henry'. So, what happened between Ada and her first husband, James Barr? Did he die or did they divorce? It's all very interesting and I think my mom should write a book! Anyway, if you could help, that would be great. Hope you are well and happy! Danny sends his love.
