- USS RHIND (DD-404) was built in September 1937 at Philadelphia, and was commissioned in November 1939 as a Benham class destroyer. She took on shakedown cruises initially, before doing training, patrols, and escorts in the Caribbean and Atlantic. After many escorts and patrols in the Atlantic, through the better part of 1943, she headed to Sicily in July to help with the ongoing invasion. She then performed patrols in the area and escorted ships to and from their destinations. USS Rhind helped the Mayrant, which was seriously damaged and needed crew rescues and then scuttled.
While assisting USS Mayrant, Rhind sustained many casualties and some hull damage, although she was still seaworthy. After this, she headed back to escort patrols through the Mediterranean and the Gulf of Salerno. Finally, she sailed for New York where she went back to coastal escort duty after an escort mission to the UK and back. In May 1945, she arrived at Pearl Harbor, and carried out training and exercises before helping with more escort missions and patrols in the Pacific War. After being involved in the atomic tests at Bikini after the war ended, USS Rhind was deemed radioactive and was sunk in March 1948.
