    Notes:

Notes of Pat Rafferty: Since he had been in the army for so many years, he had no experience or training for other work. After failure of various attempts to get himself established, the Blinks got him a little house in Melbourne, Iowa, and a job as a section hand, working along the railroad tracks cutting weed, maintenance, etc. A tough old French soldier, George never seemed to be able to adjust to civilian life, and on one occasion became involved in a brawl and lost the sight of one eye.

    Military:
George Halter was a captain in the French Army. He served for 12 years, 2 years of which were spent at war in Africa. After he was discharged from the army, he was married to a girl who had waited those 12 years for him. Her name was Barbara (maiden name not known). They were married in France and had a daughter named Mary, born in France in 1878. There were reports from other family descendants that George and Barbara had other children who died in a severe epidemic, although this information is unconfirmed.

    Died:
He was killed in a farm accident when the team of horses he was driving with a load of hay, became frightened and ran away. He was thrown from the front of the hayrack and run over.

George married Barbara in France. Barbara was buried in Rhodes, Marshall County, Iowa. [Group Sheet]
