- Mrs. Sarah (Emery) Hoover was a person of unusual character, and had a very eventful life. Being thrown early upon her own resources, she joined her brother David in a Massachusetts town, where she followed the calling of a tailoress, going about from house to house, as was the custom of the times. While here, she became acquainted with a family who were going to try their fortunes in what was then considered the far west; that is, western New York. She joined them and made the long journey safely, and started in business for herself, and succeeded so well, that she soon had quite an establishment of her own. Feeling that the other members of her family would have a better chance in the newer section of the country, she returned to Chester, and took back with her, her mother and two young brothers, Charles and Benjamin. The journey was made in a carriage until they reached the Erie Canal, when Mrs. Emerson and Benjamin took the boat, while Mrs. Hoover and Charles continued the journey with the horse. Later she made another visit to Chester, and took back with her John Porter, who remained with her until his death.
