- USS DIXIE was a destroyer tender and transport ship. USS DIXIE was ported in Philadelphia intermittently from 1909 to 1922. With American entry into World War I, USS DIXIE departed Philadelphia 31 May 1917 to join U.S. naval forces operating in European waters. Arriving at Queenstown, Ireland, 12 June1917, she served as tender for American destroyers based at that port until 15 December 1918, George was a Fireman 2nd Class and re-enlisted to become a Printer 1st Class aboard the DIXIE in Ireland from 6 Apr 1917 to 11 Nov 1918. His service number was 191-54-61.
