- Canute was the youngest of 14 children. Born in Quebec, but moved to Pembroke, Ontario when young. His father was a shingle maker in Pembroke. When Canute was 15, his parents moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba where his father took up farming. In 1883 Canute and Napoleon decided to come to Dakota territory looking for free land. They arrived at St John, Dakota Territory, June 3, 1883. Canute and Napoleon built a shack on the land that is now Coutoure Twp, and filed a claim on this land for a homestead. In the fall of 1883 the boys returned to Canada to get their parents and return to Dakota territory. In early November of 1883 ALL moved into Canutes shack.
In 1886 the first school was built in Maryville Twp. Canute was the first school treasurer. In 1888, he was elected to the shcool board and remained on the board for 15 years.
The Lafrance family was the first to settle in Maryville Twp, with Canute and Napoleon the first to arrive in Rolette county.
Canute was a widower for 12 years after his first wife died. He married Justine Lattergrass, Nov 14, 1914 and they had 9 children.
