- [S328] Elizabeth Fekete email of 20 Oct 2016.
Hello. My name is Elizabeth Fekete. I am a descendant of Antoine Vermette (1767-1812) and Catherine Saliot. I noticed that you had no information on my grandfather’s death or his descendants. Antoine was born on 9/21/1767 in Quebec, Canada. He immigrated to Michigan about 1790. He married Catherine Saliot (1765-1811) at St Anne’s Catholic Church in Detroit on 7/20/1795. There is some erroneous information that Antoine was killed in the River Raisin battle of 1812. It is documented that Antoine was mustered under the act of 2/6/1812 with Col Antoine Dequindre, the voluntary Riflemen of the Michigan Militia, war of 1812. His primary responsibility was as a homeguard against the Indians. There were approximately 60 French volunteers. On 8/10/1812 in Maguaga (now Wyandotte) in Trenton County MI, Antoine’s militia was to accompany a General (?) Miller’s troop, who were travelling from Monroe to Detroit via train. They were ambushed by the Indians and British soldiers who had crossed from Canada into Michigan. Antoine and one other soldier were killed on the first day of battle, 8/10/1812. He was originally buried in the cemetery at St Anne’s Catholic Church on 8/11/1812. Catherine has passed away in 1811, after the birth of their youngest child, and was also buried at St. Anne’s. About 1869 the church was destroyed and before the new church was erected all of the remains of those buried in the cemetery were removed and reburied in Mt Elliott Cemetery. Approx 1,500 bodies were moved. A monument was erected in 2010 by the French Canadian Society honoring those reburied. Antoine and Catherine had 8 known children: Catherine Vermette 1796-1834, Angelica Vermette 1798-1818, Victoria Vermette 1800-1885, Madelaine Vermette 1802-1879, Antoine Vermette 1805 - ?, Jean “John” Baptiste Vermette 1807-1812, Joseph Vermette 1809-1863 (my grandfather), and Mary Ann “Marie” Vermette 1811-1877. If you would like additional information concerning these individuals please feel free to contact me. I am very much interested in the Vermette family, and would be so appreciative if you would add me to your website.
Sincerely, your distant cousin,
Elizabeth Fekete
