In 1907, Mr. Luther M. Emerson, Senior, lived in Pittsburg, Kansas, where he was engaged in the insurance business. He was one of the old-fashioned Yankee boys, who was bound to have an education, which he got chiefly in the district schools, with a later course at the Sanora Academy. His first teaching was done in an adjoining district school, at eleven dollars a month. later he moved to Michigan, and when the Civil War broke out, enlisted in the 11th Michigan Infantry. His war experiences left him with impaired health, but he continued in his chosen profession for some years longer, but finally gave up teaching for the insurance business.
