There is some erroneous information that Antoine was killed in the River Raisin battle of 1812. It is documented that Antoine was mustered under the act of 2/6/1812 with Col Antoine Dequindre, the voluntary Riflemen of the Michigan Militia, war of 1812. His primary responsibility was as a homeguard against the Indians. There were approximately 60 French volunteers. On 8/10/1812 in Maguaga (now Wyandotte) in Trenton County MI, Antoine’s militia was to accompany a General (?) Miller’s troop, who were traveling from Monroe to Detroit via train. They were ambushed by the Indians and British soldiers who had crossed from Canada into Michigan. Antoine and one other soldier were killed on the first day of battle, 8/10/1812.

    Notes:

    Birth:
LDS records show 1636, St Nicaise, Arras, Pas-De-Calais, France as year and place of birth. Pierre Vermette notes show handwritten entry for "b 1644", with no location of birth. Civil notes show his age as 45 at the birth of his son Jacques in 1681, making his birth year about 1636. His birthplace is now known as Arras, Pas-de-Calais, France. At the time of Antoine's birth however, that geographical area was known as the Spanish Netherlands and was reassigned to France in a subsequent treaty.

An entry in "Origine des Families Canadiennes-Francaises" states that Antoine was from Bethune, a town located in what is now the former province of Artois. It is located about 45 miles southeast of Calais and 116 miles from Paris. It is very close to the border of Belgium, which can be seen from the top of a belfry in the modern town and has stood on the site since 1346.

Original entry: "VERMET. — De Vermelles, commune du Pas-de-Calais, arr.
    de Bethune."

    Name:
Antoine Vermet dit Laforme's name was listed as Antoine Vermiel in his son Antoine's marriage to Marie Perinault on 18 Sep 1724.

    Died:

    Notes:

    Misc:
The Filles du Roi, or King's Daughters as they were later known, were some 770 women who arrived in the colony of New France (Canada) between 1663 and 1673, under the financial sponsorship of King Louis XIV of France. Most were single French women and many were orphans. Their transportation to Canada and settlement in the colony were paid for by the King. Some were given a royal gift of a dowry of 50 livres for their marriage to one of the many unmarried male colonists. These gifts are reflected in some of the marriage contracts entered into by the Filles du Roi at the time of their first marriages. Some 737 of these women married and the resultant population explosion gave rise to the success of the colony. Most of the millions of people of French Canadian descent today, both in Quebec and the rest of Canada and the USA, are descendants of one or more of these courageous women of the 17th century.

    Religion:
Barbe Menard's mother and maternal grandparents were Calvinists in New Rochelle, France. They were known as Huguenots, followers of French reformer and theologian John Calvin (1509-1564) who further reformed and spread the Protestant theology originally established by Martin Luther. Barbe's mother was baptised as a Calvinist but was married in the Catholic church. She presumably converted to the Catholic church sometime prior to her marriage. The Huguenots were persecuted for their religious beliefs from the early 1500's through the late 1700's. During the time of Barbe's childhood, New Rochelle was designated as a Huguenot refuge by the Edict of Nantes, signed by Henry IV in April, 1598. The edict ended the Wars of Religion, and allowed the Huguenots some religious freedoms. The Edict of Nantes was revoked in October 1685 by Louis XIV which resulted in new persecution of the Huguenots and the emigration of hundreds of thousands of Huguenots to other countries. At various times during the history of the Protestant church in France, Hugenots were often offered the choice of conversion to Catholicism or death.

    Died:
Barbe Menard died giving birth to twins; Jean and a stillborn child of undetermined sex on 16 Jun 1685.
