    Notes:

From the notes of Pat Rafferty: I believe the reason the family was in two 1910 census records is that Frank W. and his wife, Harriet (Hattie J.) were not that crazy about each other and lived apart a lot. She was a refined lady, and he was a cowhand. He was a very gentle person. I don't remember hearing him use bad language, but he wasn't educated and refined as she was. He like to drink coffee out of his saucer, blow his nose with his finder, etc. When Tom and I became engaged, I showed him my ring, he kissed my finger and said he hoped I'd always be as proud of the ring as I was that night. He called me "Old Pat".

He was living with his granddaughter Elizabeth Reynolds, at the time of his death.

    Notes:

    Religion:
Oral information from Jim Halter while visiting for Isabel Halter's funeral in June 1940.

    Emigration:
Memoirs of Mabel Skeels: "There was a war in Europe and they all got so poor. Peter's brother had to pay 70 cents for a rat to cook to eat. There was no money and no food. So they put the boy and girl on a big boat and sent them to America. Those kids almost starved to death on the trip over here. Peter Halter, 11, and his sister, Sara, 12, came from France. When they landed in New York City, they had $1.00 between them. They had to eat lunch. They didn't know a soul, couldn't speak a word of English, poor people. They just stood there and didn't know what to do. The Rohrer family were some of Peter's relatives. Earlier French people. They came and rescued the two. Took them into their home. Then they went to Iowa to live."

Note: Mabel Skeel's memoirs state that he arrived with his sister "Sara" who was 12, 1 year older than Peter. Sara is not identified in any records found to date but the description may fit his sister Margaret.

Notes of Pat Rafferty: "The story of their trip and Margaret's life is recorded in the Blink Family records. They started on what proved to be a three month trip across the Atlantic. They sailed on a cattle boat and were required to furnish their own food. At one point of the crossing they remained stationary for six weeks because there was not wind to fill the sails. They landed at New Orleans and took a boat up the Mississippi River, going to Otawa, Illinois to the Retz family, as their mother was related to Mrs Edward Retz (Rosalie Roher Retz). One record said they landed in New York with only $1.00 between them and neither could speak English. Margaret worked as a servant girl for fifty cents a week in a home where she could have Peter with her."

    Buried:
Oral information from Jim Halter while visiting for Isabel Halter's funeral in June 1940. Bethel Cemetery is located west and north of Kendrick, OK. Grandson Raymond is also buried at this cemetery. Pat Rafferty notes show the burial at Greenwood Cemetery, Kendrick, OK.

Peter married Flavilla LOWE on 3 Nov 1864 in Jasper City, Iowa, and was divorced between 1870 and 1880. Flavilla (daughter of William Wallace LOWE) was born in 1843 in Cass County, Michigan; died on 7 Aug 1890 in Parkfield, California; was buried about 10 Aug 1890 in San Miguel Cemetery, San Miguel, San Luis Obispo, California. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Flavilla LOWE was born in 1843 in Cass County, Michigan (daughter of William Wallace LOWE); died on 7 Aug 1890 in Parkfield, California; was buried about 10 Aug 1890 in San Miguel Cemetery, San Miguel, San Luis Obispo, California.

    • _UID: 603A0D70884C6843A36D7471972DC2BDCEFF
    • Immigration: 1869, California

    Notes:

Flavilla was born in Michigan, 4 years before her father married Elizabeth McMurray. On the tombstone of Elizabeth Emily Lowe, the inscription "First Daughter" appears. Because of this, it seems that Flavilla must have been the step-daughter of Elizabeth.

    Immigration:
In 1869, Flavilla left Peter and traveld to her parents in Lowe's Canyon in San Miguel, CA. Frank W. Halter travelled with her by train. She must have gone back to Iowa for a while as her child, Joe Halter, was born in Iowa. Frank stayed with the Lowe's in California.

    Notes:

    Divorced:
Flavilla is shown in the 1870 census for Independence Township, Jasper County, IA as married to Peter Halter. The 1880 census for Parkfield, CA shows Flavilla married to Wallace Dittemore.

    Married:
They were married by Reuben Wilson.
