    Notes:

Mr. Benjamin K. Emerson, for many years a resident of Canandaigua, N. Y., was a tall, erect, fine looking man, with a broad high forehead, full beard, regular features, and genial manners. He was an excellent example of the sturdy Yankee boy who wins his way by sheer force of character. At the age of thirteen, he was captain of a canal boat; a little later he read medicine for two years with a physician in Tyrone, N. Y., where he also served as Justice of the Peace. After this, he took up farming, and at one time, owned about five hundred acres of land. He also dealt in milk, and was a successful veterinary surgeon, in which occupation he continued to his heath. When the Civil War broke out, he was eager to go to the front, but deferred to his mother's wishes, and remained at home. He had a kindly, affectionate, generous dispositions, and was always ready to listen to the troubles of others and to render all the aid his circumstances would permit.
